Faith Ministry Stories

Faithcares: Easter Love!

Posted by Deacon Nina Joygaard on

Faith member Kristen Mahlen shared a story of her family taking part in the Faithcares Outreach Ministry during Holy Week.

"Yesterday we dropped the baskets off for our chosen four. The first two, Shirley and Marlys, didn't answer so we left theirs (door and mailbox). Duane answered. What a sweet man! He remembered us from the last mailing so that was really nice to hear! We saved Sharon for last because I was really hoping to visit with her for a while. We arrived to find that her street had a gate. So, we parked and were determined to just walk and deliver the package. After walking for a few minutes, a lady stopped and asked if we were okay and needed a ride (it was cold). I explained what we were doing and she offered to bring us to her place (a few more townhouses down). We got there and Sharon was so excited and delighted to have us there, but I told her we had someone I just met who drove us,  waiting in the car for us (if that doesn't sound creepy). She seemed so disappointed and asked if there was any way I could drive in a different way so I could stay a while. Long story short, the kids stayed with her (she asked me if they could stay with her while I got my vehicle). I did and came back to her place. We stayed for a couple of hours and we talked about so many things. She has a history with my in-laws (my husband's grandparents and great-grandparents) when she lived in Erskine, MN growing up. The table we sat at was the table they all used to sit at. She shared a picture of my husband's great-grandfather and her father together! She was just a joy to be with, I soaked up every moment. She has family that lives in TX so I shared with her my angel story (I'll have to tell you about it, I'm sure it will give you goosebumps!) She treated the kids as her own grandkids, even giving each of them a kiss on the forehead before we left and they gave her lots of hugs! I have always been so shy but she made me feel right at home and we never really stopped talking!

By doing this, the kids were able to see where their artwork goes and how much it means to these people. It teaches them that the little things in life DO matter. And to see the happiness this brings to these people means more than anything money can buy, because it brings genuine and true happiness. My heart is so happy. Being we made a big connection with Sharon I feel like we've adopted her or something and I'm looking forward to sending random things to her, even if she's not on our mailing lists.

And to the lady who watched us walk outside and got into her car to save us, what a kind soul. She thanked us for doing God's work. I got her address so plan to send her a nice thank-you, because that also made my day! When I left for home I had a beaming smile!
