What is Lyme Disease?

Posted by Jean Peikert, RN on

The tick season has been with us for several weeks now and when we think of ticks we think of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is a multi-system, multi-stage infection caused by an organism that can be found in the infected deer ticks. These ticks are found in the east and upper Midwest.

Some signs and symptoms of Lyme disease:

  1. A characteristic bull’s eye rash can occur
  2. Fever and or chills
  3. Fatigue

Not all infected people will present with these symptoms. A positive diagnosis requires a laboratory confirmation. Sometimes even a laboratory is not reliable.

Ticks are generally found in wooded, brushy or grassy areas. When brushed up against ticks they can attach to people or animals.

Ticks must be attached 24-48 hours to their host to transmit the disease.
